When I went, this area felt like you were standing in a huge bowl with the mountains surrounding you in all 360 degrees. Long ago, this bowl was filled by Lake Bonneville, which eventually drained into Idaho. Lake
Bonneville itself acted as a giant natural mineral concentrator: rivers flowing into the lake carried dissolved minerals from the surrounding mountains, and because the lake had no outlet, water evaporated over time, leaving behind thick, mineral-rich deposits. This is exactly why, during my visit to the valley, it felt like every step I took was on pure mineral salts.
Even before Lake Bonneville, the valley sat as an ancient seabed for
millions of years, slowly accumulating layers of mineral-rich sediments. Later, about 20 million years of intense volcanic activity added even more mineral-rich rock to the valley. When I visited, there were volcanic rocks scattered throughout the valley—some literally the size of buildings. Over the millennia, runoff from surrounding watersheds continued to bring additional minerals, which deposited as water evaporated in this naturally
enclosed basin. The result is an extraordinary concentration of minerals — a rare, naturally occurring abundance only seen in a couple of places on earth.
Our new supplier harvests these truly raw electrolyte mineral salt brines from the pristine northern shore of the Great Salt Lake, a remnant of the prehistoric Lake Bonneville. The rivers in this salt-haven valley flow into the Great Salt Lake and slowly evaporate,
leaving behind layers of mineral-rich salts. There’s nowhere for the water to escape — unlike most rivers that eventually reach the ocean, here the minerals are trapped, building up over millennia. Stuart from Liquadry explained that the minerals are naturally concentrated along the lake’s edges. He said that the Great Salt Lake is like the Dead Sea and is incredibly saline — nearly ten times saltier than the
ocean.
They then solar-evaporate the salt brines, a completely natural process that uses no added heat whatsoever. Solar evaporation literally means letting the sun, the dry desert air, and the valley’s naturally low humidity do all the work — no artificial heating, no machinery, no chemical processing. Here is where it gets absolutely ludicrous!
They build a series of shallow ponds near the lake where the salt brines are left to dry for anywhere from a whopping 8 months all the way up to 24 months, depending on which minerals they’re concentrating. The longer the brine is solar-evaporated, the
more the sodium chloride and other impurities crystallize and drop out of the solution, while the naturally occurring magnesium remains dissolved and becomes increasingly concentrated.
To achieve the perfect electrolyte ratios for the human body, each pond is solar-evaporated for a different length of time. For instance, one pond may be concentrated in magnesium while another focuses on sodium. Once each pond reaches its
