In Erectile Dysfunction, as another example, the nitric oxide activates an enzyme in the penile vascular smooth muscle, which then promotes vasodilation and engorgement of erectile tissue. It pretty much relaxes the smooth muscle in the penile arteries and corpus cavernosum, increasing blood flow to the penis, which is essential for achieving and maintaining an erection. This mimics the
exact mechanism of Viagra, which enhances nitric oxide signaling. It also improves endothelial function in penile arteries, addressing vascular-related Erectile Dysfunction.
One last example, nitrates from beets improve brain function, which reduces the risk of dementia. Nitric Oxide also activates enzymes that are directly in the brain, which relaxes vascular smooth muscle in cerebral arteries. This
improves oxygen and nutrient delivery to neurons, supporting cognitive performance. Furthermore, it enhances vasodilation in cerebral blood vessels, increasing blood flow to brain regions like the frontal lobe, which is critical for executive function and memory.
As seen in the study here, it shows the effect of a high nitrate diet on brain perfusion in older adults. Perfusion is the flow of blood to the brain, delivering oxygen and nutrients to keep it working properly. Nitrates increases cerebral perfusion in older adults, potentially reducing dementia risk by enhancing neuro-vascular coupling.
